The beginning to Sonny Rast’s story isn’t uncommon, but its outcome is. So he pauses. He reaches for words, for a way to tell a story that could have ended differently. “I have no way to describe the pain,” he begins. “It was like lightning bolts.”

Sonny’s stroke occurred in a stairwell on a normal day. He was taking care of his granddaughter. “Something didn’t feel right,” Rast says. “And then the lights went out.”
